The vestry at St. Alban's
Each parish has clergy and a vestry of lay people. The rector of a church reports to the vestry and to the diocese. The rector and the vestry work together to run the church. The staff of a parish is hired and managed by the clergy with vestry approval.
The vestry is the legal representative of the parish with regard to all matters pertaining to its corporate property. Vestry members are elected at the annual parish meeting for a term of three years. The presiding officer of the vestry is the rector. There are two wardens. The senior warden leads the parish during the search for a new rector and is the support person for the rector. The junior warden is responsible for church property and buildings. We also have a treasurer who is a member of the vestry. The basic responsibilities of the vestry are to help define and articulate the mission of the congregation; to support the church’s mission by word and deed, to select the rector, to ensure effective organization and planning, and to manage resources and finances.
The rector is the spiritual leader of the congregation and is responsible for the spiritual care and direction of the parish, is responsible for liturgics, programming, staffing and direction of the staff. The rector is the official chair of each ministry in the parish, though not necessarily part of regular meetings or ministry work. The bishop is the official rector of each parish in the diocese.
